Dinner and a Movie: Snow White

Welcome to a new series where each week my husband and I watch a movie and have a meal inspired by that movie. This week is going to be Snow White! Follow along for ideas, recipes, and our thoughts on a Snow White themed dinner.

Snow White was the very first Disney animated film brought to the theaters and so I thought it was appropriate for it to be the first movie we do for our Dinner and a Movie series. The menu is German inspired and obviously film inspired, but don’t worry – no poison apples here!

Drink: Snow White’s Cookie Delight

What would dinner and movie be without a little cocktail to get the party started? Tonight we made Snow White’s Cookie Delight which is essentially a Cookies and Cream martini. Here is the recipe for two martinis:

  • 3 ounces of Vanilla Vodka
  • 5 ounces of Baileys Cookies and Cream Liqueur
  • A splash of Simple Syrup
  • Coconut shavings (for the rim)
  • Maraschino Cherry

Use some extra simple syrup to coat the rim and roll the glass in the coconut shavings. Then in a drink mixer combine ice, the vodka, baileys and splash of simple syrup and shake well. Then pour into the glass and top with a maraschino cherry. This sort of looks like the poison apple so I thought it looked cool in the drink.

Appetizer: Käsespätzle

So here’s where I got ambitious – I wanted to make a traditional German dish for an appetizer and I thought “a German take on Mac and Cheese sounds simple enough”. WRONG. Because I didn’t have store made spaetzle, I made my own. This isn’t hard to do it just added more to do. I used this recipe from Plated Cravings and the spaetzle came out fine but I don’t think I let it cool enough before I started mixing it with my cheeses and onions. I got the Käsespätzle recipe from Allrecipes.com and even though it came out texturally more like cheesey grits with onions it was really good.

The Main Course: Enchanted Forest Stew

On to our main course! I made Enchanted Forest Stew which was an Italian sausage and ground beef stew with vegetables. I literally purchased a slow cooker just to make this and also to have a slow cooker because I threw my old one away. This recipe was from The Cookie Rookie and it was super easy to make. I substituted shallots for yellow onions because my supermarket was out of shallots (a travesty, I know).

I also decided to make bread bowls out of Sourdough loaves I found at the store to make the dish seem more woodlandy. I also think it added some flavor to the stew, not that it needed more flavor but it added a nice touch.

Dessert: Grumpy’s Gooseberry Pie

For dessert I made Snow White’s famous gooseberry pie that she makes for grumpy in the movie. I love gooseberries and I knew the pie would be delicious but I didn’t realize how much. I will note, I used store-bought pie crust because I didn’t have time to make my own pie crust. The only downside to that was that I didn’t have enough left over pie crust to write Grumpy on the top. Also, this pie gets very juicy and watery so thickening it up is a must. I got the recipe from Feast of Starlight and it came out really good, even though it was super watery.

Cooking Gooseberries!

Was it my best pie ever? No, I will need to try again to perfect it, but was it a good pie all the same? Yes! It was so tart and sweet and I just really enjoyed the texture!

Overall Thoughts:

This meal was very good, albeit very time consuming to make. It was fun to watch Snow White, I haven’t watched it since I was a child and to have a themed dinner to go with it was so fun. I definitely think the drinks and the stew were the highlights of this meal but the gooseberry pie was a a close second place.

Let me know if you make this meal and how you like it! Until next time – stay magical!!
